Patent No. 1 on Diabetic Honey
DIABETIC-HONEY – A NOVALESTIC APPROACH IN MAKING HONEY FOR DIABETICS It is generally believed that diabetics should not consume sweets like sugars, honey etc. Honey is usually reported as high calorific value or high glycaemic index (> 85%) carbohydrate. However, Pragati-Ayushman could come out with Diabetic Honey which is not only useful in providing the necessary sweetness to the individual but also, reduces the blood sugar levels to a limited extent. Unlike other conventional honey samples, it contains more than 60% Fructose and less sucrose (< 2%). Due to its high fructose content the sugar is claimed to be antidiabetic.
Patent No. 2 on Muscular Dystrophy
MYOPATHY / DMD MANAGEMENT THROUGH AYURVEDA : Myopathy is one of the genetically inherited disorders causing concern all over the world today. Some of the commonest myopathies and their incidence rates are as following:
i) Myotonic Dystrophy (Autosomal dominant) - 0.2/1000 births in UK. ii) Spinal Muscular Atrophy (Autosimal recessive) - 0.1/1000 ‘’ iii) Duchenne’s Muscular Dystrophy (X-linked recessive) - 0.3/1000 ‘’ iv) Becker’s Muscular Dystrophy (X-linked recessive) - 0.05/1000 ‘’
The significance of these myopathies is because of the fatal progress without any specific treatment. This made them special for the physicians and surgeons. Such fatal genetic problems led to the formation of “Human genome project”. This international effort, plan to determine the sequence and structure of all 100,000 functional human genes by the turn of this century. Eventually it is planned to sequence all 3 x 10 base pairs of the human genome. By describing the genetic susceptibility factors of common disorders, it is expected to manage or treat the risk by sophisticated manipulations. However, no one is sure whether gene therapy will be a permanent answer for these problems or not. Emperically, the clinicians resort to steroids and CQ10 enzyme for the management of these conditions without much success. But, these medicines have sufficient adverse effects. At the same time they do not exert specific therapeutic benefit. There fore the management through alternative systems may be tried.
Some of the traditionally used medicinal plants are less known to the scientific community and one of such plant is Soymida febrifuga. It is traditionally used for fevers, wound healing. Dr. Sastry J L N explored a novelestic remedy using this plant for the management of Duchenne’s Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). This disease is identified as Urustambha according to ayurvedic texts. But, the ayurvedic texts does not mention this plant for myopathies. More over, the genetical / heriditary disorders are not curable but are manageable according to ayurveda. Therefore, a palliative remedy is prepared by using this plant which significantly reduced the raised CPK levels in DMD and other myopathy subjects. It will be the first-line therapy for the management of DMD / myopathy in the coming years.
